This animation illustrates a posterior lumbar discectomy and fusion of L3-L5. First, a laminectomy and complete facetectomy are done at the L3-4 and L4-5 levels. Pilot holes are then created at L3, L4 and L5. Disc material is excised from L3-4 and L4-5 and bone graft is harvested from the right iliac crest. After the cages are impacted into the disc spaces and right iliac crest bone graft is aslo placed, pedicle screws are inserted. A drill is used to decorticate L3-L5. To complete the fusion of L3-L5, pedicle screws are connected with rods and bone graft is placed.
